Yes. The mountain is considered sacred by the Sherpas (Tibetans who crossed and settled in Nepal, below Everest 500 years ago). In fact, for many years it was considered off limits for human beings, that is, until the westerners arrived, eager to reach the 'top of the world'. Most expeditions today begin with Buddhist prayer ceremonies, where the climbers seek the goodwill of the gods and a safe return. There are also several mani stones (boulders/rocks with Buddhist inscriptions) ont he way up as well as tombs of those who've died int heir attempt to scale Everest.
