This was a phrase used by president Obama in his 2010 State of the Union Address. He was talking about the government financial bailout of Wall street and the major banks that occurred in 2009. He said nobody wanted it, but it was necessary and beneficial to prevent a complete breakdown of our economy. He said "it was about as popular as a root canal."

The analogy was perfect. Like the bailout, nobody wants a root canal. Nevertheless, thousands of root canal procedures are performed every year primarily for two reasons:

1. They get people out of pain, and

2. They save teeth that would otherwise be lost.

The bailout got a lot of people out of severe financial pain (whether they realize it or not) and started the economic turnaround that prevented the total collapse of the economy.

Can you get dry socket from a root canal?

No. By definition, a 'dry socket' is a painful condition that occurs following a tooth extraction, not a root canal. That is not to say that you cannot have pain following a root canal. You can, particularly if the tooth was acutely infected at the time of the root canal, or if the root canal is incomplete. You should consult with the dentist who performed the procedure and follow his/her recommendations.
