Undercurrents - TV series - was created in 1994.
Undercurrents are formed when water moves in a different direction or at a different speed within a body of water, such as an ocean or river, compared to the overall flow of that water body. This can be due to a variety of factors, including changes in density, temperature, salinity, or topography. Undercurrents can flow in a different direction from surface currents and can occur at different depths within the water column.

Undercurrents can be dangerous because they create strong, often invisible currents beneath the surface of the water, which can pull swimmers or boats away from shore. These currents can be unpredictable and may exceed the strength of a swimmer, leading to exhaustion or drowning. Additionally, undercurrents can disorient individuals, making it difficult to swim back to safety. It is crucial for swimmers to be aware of local water conditions and to heed warnings about potential undercurrents.
Undercurrents form due to variations in water temperature, salinity, and density, which create differences in water pressure. These differences can lead to the movement of water masses beneath the surface, often driven by wind, tides, or the Earth's rotation. Additionally, geographical features like coastlines and seabeds can influence the flow of water, contributing to the development of undercurrents. Overall, the interaction of these factors results in complex underwater currents that can transport nutrients and affect marine ecosystems.
Very dangerous. Having grown up in a town located on this river, the youth are taught from a very young age that you stay out of the Wisconsin River. There are undercurrents that will suck you beneath before you know what happened. Even professional divers won't go into the Wisconsin River. Tourists that aren't from the area go camping and canoeing along the river, and will venture out to sandbars and camp on those as well. It is not unusual to see a large sandbar one day, only to have it disappear overnight. Many people have drowned in the river because of camping on sandbars or trying to swim in it.
