Yes, it sure can!
I've climbed the Sydney Harbour Bridge with my family. We did the night time climb and it was absolutley amazing!
Don't worry though, it is entirely safe. As you walk up, it isn't that dark, the sun is setting, but when you reach the top (which takes all of about 90minutes - because the guide that takes you up there, stops every now and again to talk about the Opera House etc. which takes time)...it is pitch black.
Before you even begin to climb, when you're getting ready to climb the bridge, you are given a head torch, so if it doesget too dark for you at any point, you can use it.
If you ever get the chance, go ahead! Usually, it takes all of about 3hrs to get up and back, they take about three photos of you while you're climbing.
- One with the background of the Opera House
- Another with the background of the Sydney Harbour and the beautiful city lights on
- And a final picture of you RIGHT at the top of the bridge.
It was a wonderful time ... and that's coming from someone who is scared of heights!!
Sydney Harbour is the city's focal point because of its waterway . It splits the Sydney city in two. Two are crossed by the famous Harbour Bridge and the Harbour Tunnel.Vistor's are attracted by the harbour's beauty, especially at night when the high-rise towers around Circular Quay, the girders of the Harbour Bridge . The harbour waters take on a magical swirl of reflected colours - red, blue, green .Sydney Harbour attractions inlcude National park, opera house, Sydney harbour bridge, cruising through Sydney harbour, etc .
In the late afternoon of 31 May 1942 three Japanese submarines, I-22, I-24 and I-27, sitting about seven nautical miles (13 kilometres) out from Sydney Harbour, each launched a Type A midget submarine for an attack on shipping in Sydney Harbour. The night before, I-24 had launched a small floatplane that flew over the harbour, its crew spotting a prize target - an American heavy cruiser, the USS Chicago. The Japanese hoped to sink this warship and perhaps others anchored in the harbour. Read the rest of the story at : http://www.ww2australia.gov.au/underattack/sydharbour.html
The first attack was on the night of 31 May - 1 June 1942 by a Japanese midget submarine. The second was a shell attack by the mother submarine on 8 June 1942. This didn't exactly land in the harbour itself, but landed in the Eastern suburbs. It is thought that it was intended to strike the bridge.
No the closest they ever got was entering Sydney Harbour in the dead of night wth mini submarines and engage in an ill fated attack. the Japanese that landed on Australian soil were either prisoners of war or they were dead.
The Night the Bridge Fell Down was created in 1983.

There are several different options for climbing. One in particular is four ways to the top. There is the bridge climb, the discovery climb, the express climb and the mandarin climb. Each route is available day and night, except for the mandarin climb, which is only available by day.
