Of course you can swim in Long Beach. The better question is "Should you swim?"... If you are talking about the ocean, I would simply go elsewhere as it is a geographic catch for a lot of pollution coming from the South. To the North, the two ports... that is, the largest port system in the world, green though it is, still generates a lot of pollution. There is the channel, but I would still be cautious and check the pollution report for the day before going in... Still many people seem to use that regularly without getting sick.

If you are like me and you love to swim but prefer a cleaner environment, the famous Belmont Olympic pool should be open though hopefully, they will make the hours and the price reasonable....
