Speaking for myself, I like going to the zoo, and I like bringing my young friends to the zoo. It exposes them to the natural world beyond what can be found in their local city park, and helps to stimulate their interest and concern for wild things. Yes, many zoo animals have been taken from the wild, but any responsible zoo is more concerned for the welfare of the animals than for getting "trophies" for their collections. These days, most wild-caught animals you see in zoos are long-lived individuals captured before zookeepers began adopting a more conservation-minded approach, or animals rescued from illegal wild-animal trade, or animals captured as part of a scientifically managed conservation program. On balance, I believe that modern zoos managed by responsible people are doing far more good than harm. Others may disagree, and they have every right to disagree respectfully and constructively.
