The Mississippi River ends about 9 miles southeast of Venice, LA at a place called
"Head of Passes". Head of Passes is where the Mississippi River splits up into three
distributaries: Pass-a-Loutre, going in an easterly direction to the Gulf of Mexico;
South Pass, taking a southerly track, also to the Gulf of Mexico; and Southwest Pass, going southwest to the Gulf of Mexico, approximately 20 miles away.
The south end of Southwest Pass is the most southerly point in Louisiana.
Southwest Pass is the most heavily used of the three 'passes' and the one
heavy ship traffic uses both in and out of New Orleans. Southwest Pass is the
only one of the passes dredged to a depth of at least 45 feet and which makes it possible for the heavy ship traffic to travel up river to New Orleans and even as far as Baton Rouge where the channel depth of 45 feet ends at the I-10 Bridge.
