Archaeologists think that they inhabitants died from Smallpox which was introduced by the Conquistadores. By the time the Spanish arrived at the site, it was already abandoned.
Most scholars hypothesise that it was built as the seat of the Inca god emperor Pachacuti, but there is no really solid evidence to prove this.
