The first to do so from west to east were Michael Asher and Mariantonietta Peru, in 1986. The first north to south trek was made by Friedrich Gerhard Rohlfs, a journey that took from 1865 to 1867. None of the crossings were made entirely on foot; the enormous distance and very rough terrain would make that prohibitive. Rohlfs traveled mostly on camel and thatalready took two years; the fairly recent west to east trek was made partly on foot, partly on camel.
