There are three calderas within the boundaries of the park itself. The oldest and largest is only partially within the park. This one formed 2.1 million years ago during the first super eruption of the Yellowstone volcano. The second and most famous formed 640,000 years ago in the third and most recent super eruption. There is a third, smaller caldera that was formed by a much smaller, though still very large eruption about 173,000 years ago. There is another caldera in this complex to the west of the park boundaries. This was formed in the second super eruption 1.3 million years ago.
