As they relate to wolves, highways, lakes and rivers can all be boundaries to territory. Whereas the lakes and rivers are natural boundaries and crossing them is difficult, crossing a highway is easier but more risky due to the potential of being hit by traffic. As wolves (and other wild animals) usually avoid contact with humans, a road or highway that doesn't smell right and has vehicles traveling on it regularly can reduce the wolf's natural hunting range.
