The ming rulers brought/encouraged confucianism and brought back the state exams. They rebuilt roads and canals, also Zhu Yuanzhang (the first Chinese emperor under the Hongwu name) extended the great wall to improve China's defenses. Hongwu also helped by lowering the taxes.
