Originally, the United States tried to buy the land from Colombia after the French had failed. The United States offered Colombia $10 million for the land plus $250,000 a year for the land where the canal would be built and 10 miles on either side for housing and military troops to protect the canal called the Canal Zone. Colombia refused. Then the United States found out that Panama, tired of harsh Colombian rule, wanted to become a separate nation. The United States sent a warship down to the bay outside Colombia capitol when Panama declared its independence and became a separate country in 1903. The United States offered Panama the same deal that it had offered Colombia. The new government in Panama accepted and the Hay-Bunau Varila Treaty was written. Many Panamanians disagreed with the treaty and argued that Philippe Bunau-Varilla was simply a resident of the area and he was not a government official in any way. The treaty was extremely advantageous to the United States and was written to give the land to the United States forever.Panama as very unhappy with the treaty and in 1977 President Carter agreed to give control back to Panama. thanks i hope it answered everything
