Today, Father Junípero Serra is remembered as a controversial figure in American history. While he is credited with founding the California mission system and spreading Christianity among Native Americans, his legacy is also marred by the negative impact of colonization on Indigenous cultures and communities. In recent years, there has been a growing reevaluation of his role, leading to protests and calls for the removal of his statues, as many view him as a symbol of colonial oppression. This duality reflects the broader conversation about how to reconcile historical figures with their complex legacies.
Father Serra was born on November 24,1713.
