1.look at a picture of a statue

2. get a pencil

3. DRAW IT!

Answer:

There are several approaches to drawing anything:

  • The iterative approach: Make any kind of rough drawing of the object. Examine each part of it and determine how you could make it look better, then change that area. Do this over and over again revisiting each section and improving it over and over again until you are happy with the result.
  • The expanding view. Choose an part of the object, a leaf, a fingernail and draw it as well as you can. The add an adjacent part drawing it as well as you can until you have addd all parts of the entire subject. The go back to the iterative method to improve it.
  • The Zen approach. Imagine the whole drawing on the paper in front of you, concentrate on it. When you can see the finished product in its entirety (every line and shading) simply trace around the drawing that you can "see"

For sculpture the steps are similar except there is a fourth method.

  • Release the imprisoned work. Take your block of stone or wood and remove all the bits that don't look like the finished product. Michelangelo used this as his description of stone carving - "I saw the angel in the marble and carved until I set him free" .
