Runoff is extra water that came from anoter body of water, usually after a big rainstorm. If there is enough water going down hill, it can form a river.
runoff
runoff can pollute a river or stream because when the water flows over the ground, it could pick up some trash or garbage on the ground, and the garbage could flow with the runoff. Then when the runoff enters a stream, lake, or ocean, the garbage will flow into the water, causing pollution.

Runoff, rill, gully, stream, and river.
It will just accumulate more water in the river but, if the runoff water becomes toxic due to nearby factories or power plants then it can damage that ecosystem.

River systems begin to form by heavy rain showers and storms. The system is begun by the puddle of water trickling from the source joining with another river beginning a small stream and so on.
