I have experienced 53 centigrade in the shade in June 1973 at Ougla and below sea level (Algeria). In the sun (unprotected) the temperature can register very much higher.

At night the temperature drops to below freezing. In this region, there is no surface water at all but less than 10 feet below the surface is a high saline water table. There also exists a strata of crushed sea shells.
