During FDR's 'New deal' many dam projects were set up along the Mississippi river in order to provide jobs, electricity, money and most importantly irrigate the arid and abandoned farmlands of Tennessee in order to pull America out of the great depression and back to being one of the biggest exporters in the world. These dams still serve similar purposes today. The river also brings tourism to the state.
