Why is the Grand Canyon important to Arizona?

I'm assuming that you mean the nickname "Grand Canyon State". I will answer from my own perspective. I live two hours from the Grand Canyon. When I go there, I feel like a minority. There are so many people from other countries that it is amazing. Here, the 5 million visitors per year, don't just learn about the Grand Canyon, they learn about Arizona. Frankly, the Grand Canyon puts us on the map. People from all over the world refer to Arizona as the state that has the Grand Canyon in it, so why not be known as The Grand Canyon State?
