What are the effects of putting dental braces on crowns and temporary crowns?

Putting dental braces on crowns and temporary crowns requires special consideration because these restorations differ from natural teeth in strength and bonding ability. Braces can generally be placed on permanent crowns, but orthodontic brackets may not adhere as strongly to porcelain or ceramic surfaces as they do to natural enamel. This can increase the chances of brackets loosening during treatment. Orthodontists often use special bonding techniques or materials to improve attachment. Temporary crowns, however, are more fragile and not designed to withstand the pressure of braces, so they may need to be replaced with a stronger restoration before orthodontic treatment begins. Additionally, tooth movement may affect how a crown fits over time, sometimes requiring adjustment or replacement after braces are completed. Close coordination between the dentist and orthodontist is important to ensure both the restoration and alignment treatment are successful.
