The prison on Alcatraz Island was first a military garrison before it became the federal prison it is most known for housing. It is not listed or known who long it took to build the initial structure in the late 1800s. The United States Justice department acquired the military barracks in 1933 and planned to use it for high risk and very dangerous criminals. Due to the high cost of operating the facility and the eroding conditions of the structures, the prison was closed in 1963.
