There's a train which travels from Cuzco to a town near the base of the mountains by Machu Picchu, and from there you can take a bus. I visited Machu Picchu (after Cuzco) recently and it is beautiful! Anyhow, just ask any police officer or store owner and they can help tell you where to go - they're very friendly!
No, you take a bus or you can walk up from Aguas Calientes.
The tours all depend on how long you want to take. There are tours available for a day trip to several days. Check out peruforless.com or www.andeantravelweb.com for more details.
Since the trail up to Machu Picchu is a long 30 mile hike, you want to be sure that you are physically fit for the climb. Get in aerobics work outs everyday, and focus on your legs and core. These are the main muscle groups your body will be using. It is good to take small hikes and carry the gear you will be taking with you. This way you will be more used to the weight of your pack.
The majority of treks on the Inca Trail take about 4 days with camp sites along the way. For people who don't want to walk they can always get a train and end at Machu Picchu.
Machu Picchu is an ancient Incan citadel located in the Andes Mountains of Peru. It was discovered in 1911 by Hiram Bingham. The site was hidden and well-preserved due to its remote location and being overgrown by the surrounding jungle, contributing to its late discovery.
