How long it took to carve etc is unknown.

However it is generally accepted that the Sphinx was built by Pharaoh Khufu - c2575 to c2465 BC - during the Old Kingdom, the age of the Great Pyramid builders.

Although the date of its construction is uncertain, the head of the Great Sphinx now is believed to be that of the pharaoh Khufu.

There is possible evidence that the monument may be older than this for an inscription within the Great Pyramid, dating from 600 BC, records that Pharaoh Khufu-Khafre's father-carried out repairs on the Sphinx's tail and headdress.

It probably took 1-3 weeks to make small, 2-3ft long sphinxes.

The Greek historian and traveller visited Egypt around 450BC and was told it took 20 years and the labour of 100,000 slaves. Half the time was taken up in building a causeway between the River Nile and the pyramid site.
