North Africa was a side show compared to the Russian Front and the Pacific. The Germans went to N. Africa to bail out the Italians who were having difficulties combating the British. The British went down there to ensure the security of the Suez Canal. The US went there to help out the British. The Suez Canal had been used by the Russian Battleship Fleets to traverse their way to the Pacific in 1905 to fight the Japanese Navy. The British knew this; nearly all British military men knew military history, and Britain had been allied to Japan during that war! The US/British also knew that Japan was moving towards the Suez Canal via the CBI (China, Burma, India Theater). Therefore, the Suez Canal Region must not fall into enemy hands; and that canal borders North Africa.

Yes, the Erie canal was built between July 4, 1817 and October 26, 1825 as part of the New York State Canal System. At the time it was built roads were unpaved and usually unusable in bad weather and railroads did not yet exist, canals were built to provide reasonably efficient and reliable transportation for bulk goods to their markets.
They lived in wooden buildings. Married men with families lived in homes and single men lived in dormitory type buildings. These small towns were spread out along the route of the canal so that the men would not have far to go to work. Many of the buildings were moved into more permanent town sites such as Balboa, Ancon, Paraiso (Colored), Gamboa and Cristobal once the canal was completed. These towns were segregated by race or country of origin. Most of the skilled labor was White and from the US, most of the unskilled labor was Black (Colored) and came from the Islands of the Carribean.
