There is no true answer to this question. One publication states there was over 100 at one time. Some occasions a mill producing more than one product was counted by the number of products it produced. On other occasions the number of waterwheels a mill had were counted. For example the Snuff Mill in Morden Hall Park had two wheels. At the Wandle Industrial Museum the relief map shows just almost 50 mills.

As a fast flowing river with a drop of over 150ft in its 11 mile length it was well suited to mills. A lot of information can be found at The Wandle Industrial Museum in London Road, Mitcham, Surrey. Their web site is www.wandle.org
