Possibly a hundred or so people, including servants, lived in the stone keeps. A keep was a last resort place of safety for defenders of a castle. In general, the Lord and his lady would have private rooms on the top, with a floor held as the great hall, where people met to eat, according to their station in life. Often a dungeon was prisoners was part of it; also room for horses and other animals. Living quarters were on an upper floor, accessible by ladder.
