The River Nile flooded every year between June and September, in a season the Egyptians called 'akhet' - the inundation. When the flood waters receded they left a great amount of very fertile soil, thereby allowing crops to be grown. Without this there would be much less arable land, therefore the crop yield would be much less and sustain fewer people.
