There is an element of danger in any cave, however slight the probability of the occurence. Lights can go out, surfaces can be slippery, roofs cave in, and so on. But on the whole, a guided tour of Mammoth Cave is quite safe.

According to the NPS Brochure, there are age limits on only three of their tours: Grand Avenue Tour, Introduction to Caving, and Wild Cave Tour. Other than these restrictions for safety, any person of any age can take a tour. Note that anyone under 18 MUST be accompanied by an adult who agrees to take responsibility for the behavior of that (legal) child or adolescent.

Now I will talk about the first modern owners of the cave. The first modern owner of the caves was Valentine Simons who purchased the property in 1798. The property was purchased in 1810 by Charles Wilkins, who put the caves to use for the mining of saltpeter, and ingredient used to make gun powder that was used in the war of 1812 that are some owners of mammoth cave national park.
