The Appalachian Mountains divide the Atlantic slope basin from the Mississippi basin.
The North Atlantic basin is younger. It started as an ocean within the content, which was called Pangaea at the time, and it slowing split the land mass into the continents that we have today. The pacific was surrounding the landmass but was called the panthalassic ocean which covered most of Earth at the time. Hope this helps..I am currently taking an oceanography class.
