Understory - The Middle LayerSmaller trees, bushes, and plants such as ferns, live in the understory. Not much sunlight reaches here, because the canopy blocks the sun. Still, many birds and animals make their home in the understory. Forest wildcats, such as the leopard, are excellent tree climbers. They will chase monkeys and squirrels through the understory for food.
Bats live in the understory layer of the rainforest. The understory is below the canopy and it's much easier for bats to fly in this layer.

Plants that can be found in the understory layer of the rainforest include ferns, shrubs, young trees, and vine plants. These plants have adapted to lower light levels and compete for sunlight in the dense canopy above. Some examples are ferns like bird's nest ferns, shrubs like understory palms, and vines like vanilla orchids.

This canopy layer blocks much of the sunlight from penetrating through to the forest floor. Additionally, the high levels of humidity and moisture in a tropical rainforest can also scatter and absorb sunlight, further reducing the amount that reaches the ground. As a result, the lower levels of the rainforest receive minimal sunlight, leading to dimmer conditions compared to the upper canopy levels.
