Tethys sea was formed in the Mesozoic era (current era is Cenozoic) about 50-80 million years ago. It was located in the region where the Indian state of Kashmir lies.

It was formed due to collision of the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates, and subsequent draining of the sea/lake.
