Getting a script read by a production company can be difficult. As a rule, these companies will not read work unless it is represented by an agent. But how do you go about getting an agent?

The good news is that many production companies are starved for good, innovative writing. They want to find you. And there are a lot of ways to help them find you.

One of the simplest and most effective ways of generating interest in your work and picking up an agent is by making the cut of a screenplay competition. There are dozens of these competitions hosted by a variety of organizations every year.

Before submitting, be sure to thoroughly research the competition. Many will provide feedback to writers who make the first round of cuts, which is an excellent reward. Also, register your script with the Writers Guild of America. This acts as insurance to protect your work.

The top competitions are the Nicholl's Fellowship and the Austin Film Festival. Slamdance and the ASA International are two other well-reputed competitions.
