It is called "Alton Towers" because the Alton Towers Resort has "Towers" which I think were built in 1980 when the Resort was first opened and the "Alton" Towers Resort is located in Alton, Stoke-on-Trent.

If you call Uttoxeter a city, then Uttoxeter. Otherwise, Stoke-on-Trent is the nearest city to Alton Towers Resort.
Depart from London Euston Station by Virgin Trains to Stoke-on-Trent Station. The journey takes around 1 hour 25 minutes. Additionally, London Midland operate an hourly service from Euston to Stoke-on-Trent, however the journey takes just under an hour longer but the fare is usually cheaper. Once at Stoke-on-Trent, a dedicated bus operated by Alton Towers takes you to the Theme Park. A combined bus travel and theme park entrance ticket can be purchased from the driver. There is no direct train service from Chesterfield to Alton Towers. Instead, you can take a train from Chesterfield to a nearby station, such as Uttoxeter or Stoke-on-Trent, and then use a bus or taxi to reach Alton Towers. Be sure to check the latest schedules for both trains and local transportation options to plan your trip.
They don't, they start in Staffordshire, in the area southeast of Stoke-on-Trent. If you've been to Alton Towers, that's pretty much where the Pennines proper start.
EXIT the airport, and follow signs to A50 STOKE (to ALTON TOWERS).Take A50 across to UTTOXETER, where you will turn onto B5030 towards ALTON TOWERS.From there, follow signs to ALTON TOWERS.
One option would be to take a National Express Coach service from Manchester Coach Station to Stoke-on-Trent (Hanley Bus Station). As Alton Towers opens at 10am, you could take the 8am serive arriving at Hanley at 9:15. From there, there are regular First Bus service to Alton Towers, all taking under 1 hour. An alternative would be to take the train from Manchester to Stoke-on-Trent railway station which would be quicker, however you would then have to get a bus from the railway station to Hanley Bus Station and then the bus to Alton Towers.
