It depends on the iron. Iron is strong in compression, but weak in tension and bending. Its strength and stiffness deteriorate when subjected to high heat, such as in a fire. Cast iron was sometimes used as construction material in the Industrial Revolution era, period between the 18th and 19th century. This was before modern steel was developed.
