Another Answer
The missisisppi river is one of the most dangerous rivers due to its vast size, and bull sharks. There were reports that bull sharks have been spotted as far north as the upper missisissippi river, and there were more sights of them at the St. Louis. Alligators and large gars are also quite common in the southern missisissippi river. There were also floods that occasionally happen in the mississippi river.

Is The Mississippi River Dangerous?
If you mean for swimming it would be very dangerous as it has numerous eddies and a strong current especially in high water. Even in low water the Navigation channel has very strong currents.
The Mississippi River as far as Navigation is also dangerous and left up to professionals especially on the lower section and the Ship Channel from the Head of the Passes to Baton Rouge. The River can be extremely hazardous in both high water and in low water. It is not a River for a person to bring a boat down unless they are very experienced boaters. They should keep their VHF Radios on Channel 16 and 13 above Baton Rouge and below it on Channel 67 and 13 or on Vessel Traffic Control Channel when asked. Remember that downriver traffic has the right of way. Also remember that it takes more than a mile for a down bound ship to stop and probably that for most towboats pushing barges. I have been in situations where even after 30 minutes in full speed reverse I had not come to a complete stop so even if you think you have right of way stay out of the way of the tows and ships and leave them the channel. Most boats can get out of the channel a little a barge or ship cannot.
Second Part yes their are Bull Sharks in the Mississippi River but I have personally never heard of one of them attacking a person in that river. They have in other rivers but the Mississippi River is so muddy they could attack by accident I suppose but it is not something I would worry about. If you are not a very experienced boater do not go down the Mississippi River until you get experience and try to make some small trips on the River with experienced boaters. The eddies can even cause problems for boats and turn one around if not done right.
