Kaskaskia, IL has been west of the Mississippi River ever since the river's course shifted in 1881.

It was the capital of the Illinois territory from 1809 to 1818, and the state capital from 1818 to 1819. Rebuilt in several different locations along the bank, its population declined to practically zero following a disastrous flood in 1993. Census data shows between 9 and 14 residents.
