The narrowest part of the Mississippi is between 20 feet and 30 feet wide where it begins, flowing out of Lake Itasca in northern Minnesota. A world-class long jumper might make it. It can be waded across along a small rock dam or walked across on a log bridge.
It is easiest to cross farther south when it freezes in the winter, and one can (with care) walk or skate across.
