It is a 3 hour drive from the Hoover dam to the Grand Canyon viewing areas. The Grand Canyon National Park actually adjoins the Lake Mead Recreational Area which surrounds the reservoir held back by Hoover Dam.
Francisco Vasquez de Coronado had set out in search of gold and other treasures to bring back to Spain, but was disappointed to find only mud, stone, and angry Zuni warriors in the southern Americas - now known as Texas - and Mexico.
John Wesley did not discover the Grand Canyon. You are thinking of Maj. John Wesley Powell, who made the first journey down the Colorado River through the canyon with nine men, 24 May-30 August 1869. However, the earliest reference is Pedro de Castañeda's account of a small group of Spanish explorers who found it after hearing stories of a large canyon during a visit to the Hopis in 1540. The canyon was little known until Lt. Joseph C. Ives and Dr. J. S. Newberry visited its lower end in April 1858 and brought back the first geological description of the region.
The rock layers exposed on the walls of the Grand Canyon are significantly older than the canyon itself. The rock formations, such as the Vishnu Schist, date back about 1.7 billion years, while the Grand Canyon was primarily formed over the past 5 to 6 million years through erosion by the Colorado River. Thus, the canyon is much younger than the ancient rocks it reveals.
It is the only place on earth that has been carved out by water erosion to such a great depth and area.

Not any longer. Wolves are slowly returning to the desert southwest, and may (eventually) come back to there.
The simple answer is North.Grand Canyon Village is home to several lodges inside the National Park on the South Rim. Grand Canyon Lodge is also located inside Grand Canyon National Park, but along the North Rim. Grand Canyon Lodge is closing for the winter and will open again in March. Though there are only a dozen or so miles separating the two locations, there is no easy way to get from one to the other. Hiking from the South Rim to the bottom of the Canyon and back up to North Rim is a very exhausting and difficult exercise for anyone unprepared. The only other way for a person to get to the North Rim from the South is by car, either shuttle or private, about a 5 hour drive.
The Colorado River.orThe standard school of thought was that the flow of water following glacial activity created the Grand CanyonRecent studies are putting forth the theory that a severe geological event created the Grand Canyon - and the river is a result of "water chooses the easiest path to flow"either way - the Grand Canyon is certainly "Grand"
The oldest fossils in the Grand Canyon are found in the layers of sedimentary rock near the bottom of the canyon, dating back around 1.2 billion years ago. These fossils provide insights into early life forms and the geological history of the region.
The time it takes to hike to the bottom of the Grand Canyon and back varies depending on the route and your physical fitness level. On average, it can take anywhere from 8 to 12 hours to hike to the bottom (such as the Bright Angel Trail) and back up in one day. It's recommended to plan for a multi-day hike to properly enjoy and explore the canyon.
