Historically Hong Kong was part of China. Then in the 19th century - over a period of fifty years or so - Great Britain took possession of Hong Kong island, the Kowloon peninsula and then the surrounding area called the New Territories. Britain's lease on the New Territories expired in 1997 and the UK agreed to return Hong Kong to Chinese control.
Students in Hong Kong are required to study History, along with Chinese History, from form 1 - 3 in local schools.
The irony lies in the fact that the Taiping Rebellion, led by Hong Xiuquan in 19th-century China, was one of the deadliest wars in history, resulting in massive loss of life and devastation. Despite the name "Taiping" meaning great peace, the rebellion caused immense chaos and violence.
