Mission San Diego de Alcalá, founded in 1769, was the first of the California missions established by Spanish Franciscan missionaries. Initially, it served as a religious and cultural center for Native Americans, as well as a base for Spanish colonial expansion. Over time, it experienced various transformations, including periods of neglect and restoration, but its primary purpose has always been as a mission. Today, it remains an important historical and cultural site.
The first mission in California was San Diego de Alcala, located in San Diego.

This mission was always one of the poorest. The land was difficult to till, the water not always plentiful. Slowly, Mission San Diego de Alcala became more productive.
