The answer to this question, of course, depends on the specific park. As mandated by Congress, the National Park Service is required to protect natural, cultural, and historic resources while providing for the enjoyment of visitors and for future generations of visitors. Whatever "improvements" are made to a park must not detract from the natural, cultural, and historic resources. That's why there aren't rollercoasters in national parks.

A good National Park will have information available to visitors that enhances their experience. It will have services that provide for visitors of all interests and abilities to enjoy the park. It will allow visitors to enjoy the park while protecting resources. And, ideally, the park will retain (and reintroduce or remove as necessary) the full spectrum of its natural features such as wildlife, geologic features, plants, watersheds, etc.

The most important thing is to go and experience the parks. Experience them with friends and family, and tell people about them. Without public enthusiasm for the parks, it makes supporting them through funding impossible.

The most important thing is funding. Without tax dollars, national parks are not possible to maintain.
