After serving in the Civil War, he moved to Illinois, where he conducted significant scientific work. He eventually settled in the West, particularly in the region around the Grand Canyon, after his famous expedition down the Colorado River in 1869. Powell also spent time in Washington, D.C., where he contributed to the establishment of the U.S. Geological Survey.
