The best thing to do on Mount Everest is definitely to trek!
There are various treks you can do depending on your fitness levels. The one I did was the Everest Base Camp trek which seems to be the most popular choice - you do need a moderate level of fitness but it's the best way for the regular tourist to see Everest. You also get to stay in tea houses along the way which really gives you a feel for traditional Nepal. If you go in the Autumn and fly into Kathmandu, make sure you stop in at Namche Bazaar for their Mani Rimdu festival, it's really lively and worth going to.
