I don't know if it is common but I saw what I believe to be an Eastern Worm Snake on a dune on Oak Island. It was long and skinny with a head the same size as the rest of its body. It was a dark rust color and I saw it along a path through the dunes. When I tried to "scare" it out of the way with a piece of driftwood, it made no attempt to flee. First snake I have ever seen in the 20 years we have vacationed there.
