Stone rings and rows of stones are a common feature across Britain and parts of France. We don't know for sure what all of them were used for, though some of them definitely have an astronomical purpose. Some are arranged so that a certain star is visible on a certain night of the year. They mark the beginning of the seasons, so they may have been used for predicting when to plant crops. Rows of stones in northern France may have been used as a primitive seismometer for recording earthquakes (that region of France is prone to earthquakes.) As far as their age, we don't even know that for certain, though they certainly are several thousand years old.
