Sometimes we need to compare similarities to recognize differences.

The differences between oceans and the moon include:

  • The moon is a body (mass) orbiting the earth. An ocean is a body of water on the earth.
  • The ocean has varying heights of "land masses", i.e. valleys, mountains, ravines, crevasses, as does the moon. But most of the land masses in an ocean are covered by its water. The moon has atmosphere covering its land masses, although at one time the moon may have had bodies of water.
  • The chemical components found on the moon are found in its land surface (in its dirt), but chemical components are found both in the water and land surface in an ocean.
  • Both a moon and an ocean could, theoretically, be drilled but we don't know what lies under the surface of the moon; we do know gas and oil lies under some oceans.
  • An ocean supports aquatic life. As far as we know now, the moon supports no life except perhaps microscopic organisms.
  • While our moon reflects sunlight, and an ocean reflects sunlight, only the moon can be partly obstructed from earth's view. (Example: half moon)
  • Although both our oceans and our moon are largely unexplored areas, the moon remains much more unexplored.
  • We know more about the ocean and its life forms than we do about the moon's, yet, we still know much less about our oceans than other earth features.
  • While we can travel easier to an ocean, we still can't explore it thoroughly, just like the moon.

Why is the moon connected to the sea?

The gravitational pull of the moon creates tides in the Earth's oceans. As the moon orbits the Earth, its gravity causes the water in the oceans to bulge, creating high and low tides. This connection between the moon and the sea is known as tidal influence.
