A broad question - Rivers establish commerce routes for goods and supplies among cities and nations. Rivers provide irrigation to ajacent farms and support agriculture. Rivers offer a direct source of food, be it fish, clams or other wildlife. Rivers, sadly, can be used as drainage and waste evacuation routes... look up the dead zone... Rivers offer recreation for boating, swimming and snorkel/SCUBA diving. Rivers supply a ready source of water, if it needs to be treated or not, within the supply-line - for communities within several hundred miles. (The Colorado River supplys drinking water to Colorado, Arizona and California...)
