With animals of any kind you must keep an attitude of sharing space with no fears or threats, friendly but not overwhelming, never imposing, cruel or abusive.

With pets you know, be friendly and helpful, let them understand your interests and your limits with patience and in a playful manner, try to understand their interests and limits and respect those. With pets you don't know, let them approach you and only touch them if they encourage you to do so. If they become aggressive just walk away calmly.

With wild animals, observe them, enjoy to see their attitudes but do not approach them unless they need help and even then with extreme caution, they are not pets, they will not want to harm you but they might be afraid of you and defend themselves through aggression. Never be cruel or aggressive to wild animals, enjoy and let them enjoy their existence.

With all animals you don't know and principally with wild animals, do not look fixed at them or at their eyes, that is the way predators look at their victims and no animal will like it.

Time and companionship can be enjoyed with an animal if you let them decide when to be near, you will be deciding when to stay and when to go which is the most intelligent part.
