Lake Baikal is located in central Russia a bit west and south of the middle of the country. It is the largest freshwater lake in the world by volume and contains one fifth of all the world's fresh water. One of the only entirely fresh water seal populations in the world calls it home. Lake Baikal is located on the Asian continent.

Lake Baikal in Siberia, Russia (Asia), is the world's deepest fresh water lake at 1,638 metres deep. It is 636 km long and is the world's sixth largest lake and 1,181 metres of it is below sea level.

It contains 20% of the world's fresh water which is so clear that divers suffer from vertigo.

Based on sediment at the bottom, it is also the world's oldest lake at 25 million years, based on an ancient fault, the Olkhon Crevice.

2,000 species of plant and animal life have been identified in Lake Baikal, 75% of which appears nowhere else in the world.
