Gaspar de Portolá, alongside Father Junípero Serra, played a crucial role in the Spanish exploration and colonization of California in the 18th century. They are best known for their expedition in 1769, during which they discovered and established the first Spanish missions in California, including Mission San Diego de Alcalá. Their journey was significant for mapping the California coastline and laying the foundation for future settlement and missionary work in the region.

Father Junipero Serra is credited with discovering California. Once he arrived there, he set up the first missions in the area.
Check out the USC site on Portola's Expedition (you will have to pay for a map but it's the best I've seen so far). I am researching him due to my close proximity to where him and Father Serra rested in Ventura next to the Santa Clara River. Interestingly both Portola along with Serra are not Spaniards, they are Catalan men. Father Serra is from Petra, Mallorca (Balearic Islands) where they speak a dialect of Catalan. Portola is from the province of Lerida or Llieda and also has connections to the Araneses (Gascon) of the Vall De Aran, Catalunya.
